The Day Off

We all love a good day off, whether it be a day off from school, work, or being stressed out about life. There's something about not having anything to do or really worry about for a day that's refreshing and rejuvenating. A few things that I like to on my day off include

  • Being horizontal for as long as possible. You don't necessarily have to be laying down but sitting and relaxing is key.
  • Munchies. Hang out with your favorite snack and/or beverage while being horizontal.
  • Cooking. This is a personal one. I love to cook when I'm at home hanging out. Usually Brooke is working when I have a day off so it's nice to cook something good for her to come home to.
  • Watch something good. It's been awesome to catch up on my shows and hang out with a good movie.
Here's a couple links to some old school disney cartoons about days off for your enjoyment : )

Well this is a short post. I mean, it is my day off  : ) Take it easy everybody!

Culinary Chronicles #3

Well, another week has gone by and life in culinary school is as good as ever! We are learning the basic cooking methods like roast, braise, fry, grill, saute, poach. We did some great recipes that I'll post on damnthelemonade so you can check them out. They were super easy and delicious! I'm still in my safety and sanitation class and it's going good. We finished parasites so here's a link to a video we watched about cryptosporidium. It was pretty gnarly to see how tough some bugs are! We also learned about cockroaches and other creepy crawlies that can infect a kitchen and how to get rid of them. Pretty mellow week, and culinary foundations 1 is almost over! Then a 3 week break and I start foundations 2 where we actually get to start doing some cooking! Sorry this post is so short. NOW this up coming week is going to be a little crazy! I have almost nothing but tests everyday! Thank goodness it's on knife cuts, recipes, herbs, spices, and who wrote the first cookbook instead of useless imaginary math questions. Thank goodness for easy math questions in the form of cooking measurements! We learned a bit about lobsters this week when we made lobster bisque and I thought this clip of Julia Child talking about lobsters was kinda funny but actually really informative.
Here's the link Julia Child and Lobster! Have a good week everybody!

sick!

So once again I have a cold...I'm in Florida and I have a cold...it's crazy. So this post is going to be about what I like to do when I'm sick.

#1. Do as little as possible- It's never fun to do a lot while you're sick! I wasn't going to go to school today but I really like school so I guess I'll suffer through it. On the other hand, I don't want to go into work today so I'm praying they call me and say that I don't have to come in.

#2. Drink lots of tea!- As a matter of fact I have a thermos of tea right next to me at this very moment. It's a tension relief tea with peppermint, lemon and ginger that my dear sweet wife bought for me! And I spiked it with a good glob of honey and a few drops of fresh lemon juice. Sure feels great!

#3. Eat something hearty and flavorful- For a lot of people, I don't think eating is on their list. Eating wouldn't be on my list if I was nauseous of course but when I have a cold I'm always looking for a real hearty satisfying meal. Oh yeah, and it needs to be packed with flavor! Why? Because one major cold symptom of a cold is congestion, and you won't be able to taste anything if the food doesn't have loads of delicious flavors.

#4. Watch movies, and catch up on favorite T.V. shows- It's always good to be entertained when you're sick. Nothing better than hanging on the comfortable couch with a snack and getting your mind off how crappy you feel.

#5. Sleep- Last but not least, sleep is great. It's nice to take some awesome cold medicine and crash in a comfy bed. Plus, everyone knows that sleep is one of the best things for you to do while your sick. It's nice to take the day and just relax.

Well, that's my list. It's pretty basic but it's nice to do this stuff to make you feel better! If anyone does anything else that is interesting or "fun" (when I mean fun, I mean it in a make you feel a little less like dying kind of way) leave a comment. And here's some cartoons about being sick I thought were awesome. ENJOY!

Culinary Chronicles #2

So a couple weeks have gone by in my classes and I've already learned a ton! Right now I'm in Culinary Foundations 1 and Food Safety & Sanitation. The classes alternate every day and it's a lot of info coming really fast. So far in my sanitation class we're learning about the proper handling of food along with proper holding temperatures, receiving and processing of food, and preparation.  It's a good time and I've learned some crazy facts about things like botulism and other food borne illness. Here's a link to a clip we watched in class about ice and how dirty it can be in restaurants. Just click the link Dirty Ice. In Culinary Foundations, we've learned basics like vinaigrette and homemade mayo, as well as how to make "mother sauces" and stocks. We've worked on knife skills with various vegetables and the specific cuts that can accompany a dish. I'll actually be posting recipes on Damnthelemonade if anyone is interested and they'll be stuff that I learn in school as well as random recipes that I try on my own. Well, that's it for this week but there will be much more to come! Here's a little comic that I thought was kinda funny courtesy of toothpastefordinner.com.

Holidays!

Well this post is a couple days late but thanksgiving is really a great holiday if it's done properly. I was worried this year that thanksgiving wouldn't be worth much because me and my wife moved to the opposite side of the country and away from our families. I was worried that I would be home sick and really miss everyone back at home but the truth is I had a wonderful thanksgiving here in Orlando Florida with just me my beautiful wife and our little dog. We went to Disney World for part of the day then went home and made dinner. We had ham, mashed potatoes with jalapeƱos,bacon, and cheddar cheese, stuffing, sweet potatoes, and gravy. Oh I can't forget pie!!! My wonderful wife made two pumpkin and one pear pie (one of my favorites). We chowed down then went and saw the movie "Tower Heist" with a friend. Later, I went home while my wife went "Black Friday" shopping while I went home and went to bed. What a day! Now it's the holidays and Christmas is coming up quick I'm super excited for all the holiday happenings and I'll Try to post what's going on in the river rats life. Happy holidays everybody!

Culinary chronicles #1

Those of you that read this blog on occasion and that know me personally already know that I just recently moved to sunny Florida with my beautiful wife and our little dog to go to culinary school. It's been a wild ride so far but school has started and it's turning out to be better than I expected! I rafted all summer and wrote about my river adventures. Now I would like to share some of my culinary adventures with all of my friends and family and other curious and more than welcome readers. As for exactly what I'm going to share here opposed to my other blog Damn the lemonade I'm still deciding. I think I'll post recipes on damn the lemonade and talk about things I've learned and what's going on with life at school and the stuff I'm gonna be doing there. This could possibly change based on mood and all the normal random stuff that could happen to change my mind. but either way I hope to share some cool stuff with anyone who reads.

River Chronicles #11

Well this is it. The last trip of the season. This post has taken forever to get done because I moved to Florida and had a little bit of a bumpy time. This last post will be a little different than my others. I'm gonna do the post the post journal style instead of just giving a brief summary at the end and see which one I like the best.

Tuesday September 20th 2011

Well it's day three of our trip already. We've pulled into Nankoweep for a half over because the hike is good, the beach is shady and we rowed a lot our first two days. It feels good to finally row the Grand Canyon. It's already given me a new perspectuve and a renewed respect and appreciation for the power of the river and a greater love for the canyon. I feel like I've done well so far but even as I write that I know I haven't done anything really difficult. There's a lot more to come. The people are great. They relax when it's time to relax and they play when it's time to play. The crew is great too! Kevin is TL with Butch and his wife, Nancy. Then there's Mark, my dad Bryan, Joe, and me. OH, I can't forget Ron my bailer. So far it's been great and I can't wait for whats next.

Thursday September 22nd 2011

It's day five. I've already cooked for the second time cause we're doing cook crews and switching off. I have the night off and we're camped at Rattlesnake Camp and we only came a few miles today. We hiked to Hill Top Ruin, wandered around the Unkar Delta and saw Ancestral Puebloan foundations and pottery shards. We got to camp early and Mark and Kevin took a few people on a hike to a large mesa called the tabernacle, while my dad, joe and ron cooked lasagna  : ).....as for me....I'm just hanging out. That's another thing that is amazing about this place, the sound of the river, the usually perfect temperature in the evening, and the scenery make Grand Canyon a great place to just enjoy life. There's no cell phones or other distractions, it's just relax. I love this place! It's a great place to just think and love life. As for enjoying life, we go into the gorge tomorrow.. BIG WATER!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Saturday 24th 2011

Wow! Today we ran granite, hermit, crystal and the gems. Granite was interesting. I had a good line but I felt out of control. I went through and hit the big stuff head on and made it through with no real issue other than my boat was FULL of water. Hermit was a different story. I've never screamed in excitement so much in my entire life. The waves were HUGE in a row boat! I always thought the ride was big in a motor boat, but it's just nuts in a row boat. I liked my run. I hit everything straight on and we made it through safe and sound. That last ride in was definitely a highlight of the summer! Crystal.....my run pretty much sucked and I feel like I got pretty lucky. It all started with me going sideways through the right shoulder of the hole....I'm happy I didn't flip. Then, as I think I'm out of the through, I'm heading down the right channel and end up going over a rock sideways.....I'm stuck, we high side, and start bouncing on the boat to shake it loose and I'm screaming every four letter word in the book.....not one of my proudest moments. We came off a few seconds later and I scream "GET ME OUTTA HERE" as I grab the oars and start to push out of the rapid. We made it through alive and upright so that's a big plus. It wasn't pretty getting through there but it could have been a lot worse. Me and Mark cooked some sweet salmon for the folks and life is good. The trip is going great and everyone seems happy. We still have a long way to go but oh boy am I glad crystal is behind me!
Ron punching through a killer wave in Hermit, what a ride!!
Thursday 29th 2011

Today was CRAZY! It started like any other river day. Wake up, eat breakfast, load the boats, stop at Fern Glen for a hike, row to Lava Falls, stop and scout.....we get set to run. Kevin Jo is the first in line with me next, then my dad, Butch, Joe, and Mark running sweep. We all scouted together and we all knew the run that we wanted. There was tension in the air but everyone was confident...I personally thought I was gonna have a heart attack and die, but I kept my cool : ) We got in the boats, and pulled away from the shore. Kevin Jo was first with me second, my dad third followed by Butch, Joe, and Mark Jo. Kevin got set up, went down the slot and dissapeared out of sight. Three seconds later I saw kevins boat upside down spinning in the ledge hole, I yelled "KEVIN IS OVER! KEVIN IS OVER!" to the other boats and I panicked a little, completely forgetting what was going on and started to freak out I yelled "WHAT SHOULD I DO!!" Which looking back is ridiculous cause I was literally just about to enter the rapid at this point. I couldn't hear it, but my dad was screaming "JUST GO!!!" but what snapped me out of it was my bailer Ron, He yelled "PICK A SPOT AND GO!" I snapped out of it and hit the slot, went past the hole and made it through ok!! We were soaked and full of water but we were freaking upright!!! Now that we were through it was time to start looking for people and keep the trip going. We were headed down stream and we heard that Butch got thrown out of his boat, and that his wife Nancy came floating by by herself with their boat. Then Joe came floating by on top his boat with both of his frames hanging off either side of the boat with no people in it.....We headed down stream and began helping Joe put his boat back together while Mark got Kevin's boat back together. We had a bunch of help from two other companies A.Z.R.A, and C.R.A.T.E they picked up one of our passengers, and helped get Kevin and Joe's boats over to shore. The rest of the group came down a little after, and we had lunch on the beach. We made it through without anything serious, Kevin and Butch were cut up a bit but nothing too serious, and others had some bumps and bruises. We didn't lose anything that we couldn't really stand to lose and some straps and oars broke. It was by far the most carnage that I've seen on the river and I hope I don't see that much again! But that was it! My last trip for the season!! We made it through ok, and it was a trip to remember! To finish up, I just wanna say to anyone who went on the trip that has read this, that if anyone has more info about any of what went on during the trip feel free to add it in the comment section. : ) So that's it for this season I loved every minute of it and I can't wait till the next season!

River Chronicles #10

Trip number ten down!! This was a really fun one. It helped that it was a fun trip because I'm kind of beat after ten trips. The trip was with twenty really great guys from Sweden. The trip was organized and brought all together by two extremely talented and adventure loving gentleman. Let me just say that this was probably the most rowdy group I've had all summer. These guys knew how to party and you couldn't help but to join them. Two ukulele's were brought on the trip and they added a musical feature that I've never had before. Great songs were sung before and after dinner from both Sweden and the U.S. and it was a really fun time to hang out and to get to know everyone. The weather was pretty good but it threatened to rain almost everyday. The little Colorado was muddy but we swam anyway. I mean, I only have so many times I can swim there, right?! The food turned out great and the guests were really happy with it. A couple of the nights there were more than a few bottles of whiskey opened and drained before bedtime as the whole group sang songs and told stories. I really believe that this was one of my most memorable trips. The people were great, the crew was great and the work was easy. This was my last motor trip for a while. I have another trip coming up on Sunday but it will be in row boats and that will sadly be my last trip for a couple years. I love the river and I love the opportunity to work for the greatest company down there. I'm so stoked I have one more trip left and that it's slow and long so I can enjoy the canyon for as long as I can. Another adventure awaits and there are more rapids to be run! Wish me luck! Sorry I don't have any pictures yet, I'm hoping to get some from the swedes. When I get them I'll post them up for you all to take a look.

River Chronicles #9

Another trip down, and it was a pretty important trip for me. After years of training, I finally got my own boat for a trip!!!! It felt great to be on a trip where I had control of what went on on my boat. Jake Skeen was our fearless trip leader, Kevin Honeycutt was our trainee, Jake's friend, Tyson, was one swamper, and I got to bring my wife!!!!! I was so excited! I've had to leave her alone all summer so it was nice to finally be able to bring her with me. We also had my aunt Lorie with us too. She helped a ton and was there to take pictures for the company. The trip went well, the people were really nice and the weather was great. We still had high water, and the side canyons, Little Colorado and Havasu, were clear and blue. There really wasn't anything too crazy to report. It was a great trip and I was sad to see it end. BUT, before I finish, I have to tell you about the 9 year old spawn of Satan that was on the lower end of the trip. I've never seen a more horrible little kid in my life! He screamed at his parents, and would not stop asking to do things that he already knew he couldn't, like asking to get on the boat before he was supposed to and asking for lunch before it was done. The last night, he had a full blown melt down and what did his parents do??.....NOTHING!! Their friend who was on the trip finally did something and took the kid away from the group. I'm not going to go into detail about all the stuff the kid screamed at his parents, but I was blown away when the next day his mom asked me if anyone else on the trip had noticed and was annoyed by the kids behavior......HELLO!!!! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!!! No one wanted to even ride on the same boat as the little demon!! Well, the trip ended and it ended up being a sweet trip. Here's a few pictures Enjoy!

River Chronicles #8

The whole crew in hangin at Havasu
Back in the grand canyon!!! It felt great to be back in the Grand Canyon after being on the Cataract! Rafting there was great, but there's something that hits me hard to be in the Grand Canyon. I got to run with Joe one more time as our fearless trip leader, and my main man Russ as second boatman. I also had my brother in-law, Cory, on the trip to help out, and one of Joe's friends, Ramsay. With this crazy crew, we had a great trip with no real issues. We hiked, sang, told stories, ate, rafted, and laughed our way through the trip and I was sad to see it end. I honestly finished the trip happy but super sore...I think the season is finally catching up to me physically. Ugh!! But I have a week off so I'll be ready for the next trip no worries.

River Chronicles #7

After two days off from my last cat trip, I headed down again to Moab. For guess what?? ANOTHER SCOUT TRIP!!!This time it was a little more mellow. We had fifteen people and it was me and Joe as guides with two j-rigs. The weather was great, and the boys had fun and were safe.I think the only major thing that happened was that Joe caught a cold and was down for the count for a couple days. He worked through it though and we got everything done and the people had a good trip. We got off the river and headed down to Fredonia to rig another trip in the Grand Canyon!!

River Chronicles #6

Another cat trip!! But this time with THIRTY SCOUTS! The trip was huge! There were seven crew, four row boats, a paddle boat, and two J-rigs. The trip went great and the food was pretty good. It was cooked by the scouts so things in the kitchen got a little crazy. We got through the rapids okay. We did have a interesting time in big drop two when the paddle boat went into the claw and everyone in the whole boat got washed out. We picked them all up without any real problems except the one boy who bit through his bottom lip. We got to camp shortly after and patched him up and he was back messing around a little later. And that's pretty much it. A fun trip, mellow and a great time to hang with a bunch of great crew and scouts.

River Chronicles #5

Well, I came off the Grand and went straight from there to Cataract Canyon. Nate and I headed down to Moab to meet Jake who had been rigging the trip by himself. We drove all freaking night and got to Moab at 4:30 am.....We walked in the room and found all the lights on with Jake fully clothed passed out on the bed. We slept for an hour and a half, woke up and cruised to the warehouse. After throwing all the stuff on the boat we headed for the river. We put in at a place called Gold Bar and wouldn't you know it, we got stuck in the mud. The end of the boat was five feet from the water and the trailer was pushing mud.....We had no shovel....We had no way to dig.... So what do we do?? We use salad bowls and our bare hands!!!!!!  We dug enough to get the trailer out and we got the boat in to the river! The trip was great. We had a lot of time to float because of the high water so that meant getting to camp early, and some good time to chill. The last night we got a special treat. We got to see our oldest guide, Dave Stratton, do his Chuck Norris look alike roundhouse kick on a loaf of bread. I don't think that I have ever laughed so hard in my life! Here's a few pictures of what happened on the trip.

Killer wave!

Obi Dave Kanobi Jedi master making contact with a loaf of bread!!

After all the crazy, the trip went great and we had huge water! The river was still flowing 65.000 cfs and the rapids were massive! We saw a flash flood and "Chuck Norris" in action. The trip ended and I went home for a week to be with my beautiful wife.

River Chronicles #4

Well I gotta say....I had more fun on this trip then I've had in awhile. It was over the fourth of july and it was really cool to be in the canyon with people from all over the country. We didn't even miss the fireworks. The day was great and I don't think anyone really missed all the noise and smoke that usually comes with the holiday. Nate Haldeman even said, "The stars that night were our fireworks."
Everyone was great and with a younger crowd I was able to make some good friends. The trip was like almost any other but I was with my dad. It was nice being with him although I realize in my old age I'm just as hard headed and stubborn as he is. We usually got past our differences with little issue though and the trip went on. A few highlights were great scenery, lots of rain, good crew, and 28 really great passengers. If any of them read this, thanks for the great trip! You all made it awesome! Come see us again!
The major highlight for the trip was the massive rain storm that hit us on our fourth day. We had just finished a stop at Havasu and the clouds began to close. We motored for a while and the clouds slowly began to look a little more threatening. I thought, "I'll just get my coat out just in case it rains." I got out my rain coat and no sooner had I put it on a massive gust of wind came up the river and smacked us down. Then came the rain! It began to pour and with the major gusts of wind the drops stung if they hit your bare skin. We pulled over to the side of the river and waited for a bit to let the storm pass. After a while, the rain mellowed and the wind calmed. We went down river only to find waterfalls coming out of every drainage and off of almost every cliff. We passed two canyons that were gushing mud and water out into the river. The spray that came from the massive waterfalls spread all the way across the river. The air smelled like mud and silt. It was an incredible sight to see, and I believe that everyone knew they were getting to see something special. We ran lava falls and came through clean and safe and had a great last night together. The trip ended up without any issue and afterward Nate and I went on to Cataract Canyon to run our next, hopefully just as successful trip!

River Chronicles #3

Another Grand Canyon trip and it was great, and relatively mellow. We did the hikes, and saw the waterfalls. The passengers were fun. There was a large family, and a few other couples. The weather was HOT!!!!!!! I don't think that any other trip I've gone on was so hot but we made it. A major highlight from the trip was when an older gentleman had to be evacuated because of previous health issues that had been aggravated during the trip. Last I heard he was stable in the hospital and his family were about to pick him up. The water was high and we had clean runs, no one got hurt and it ended up being a great trip. OH, I forgot to mention that the trip leader Jake proposed to his fiance Cassi on the trip. It was super cool and added a special occasion to the trip. Congrats guys : ) So that's it for this trip but I got a lot more to go : )

River Chronicles #2

So another river trip down. This one was about twice as long, and the primary focus of the trip was to do as many hikes as possible. I enjoyed the trip and it was hard work but rewarding. I was able to do hikes that I would never have been able to on a regular motor trip due to time restraints. But with the extra time to hike came extra time to use up all my energy. By the last few days, I was spent.
The people were great! They woke up at 4:30 and a few would pace the beach until coffee was ready around 5:30. I personally thought it was kinda weird but to each his own I guess. Then they would go to sleep at 8:30 which was actually pretty nice.   : ) All the guests could hike like crazy!! No matter what hike it was and at no matter what pace, they were right on the leaders tail when even he was huffing and puffing. The weather was great with only one night where we put up tents as a safety precaution.
The water was HUGE! It was awesome! The rapids had changed a lot since I had last seen them. Some got smaller, while others got bigger. We had clean runs for the most part, however my dad flipped a row boat in Spector rapid. Everyone came out okay and we only lost a camera and a few loaves of bread. When the trip was over we piled all the rafts high on top of the motor boat. We got it all strapped down with a few things tied on the back of our flat bed truck. Among these things were two of our full groovers and a generator. We went on up the road when we heard a thud and noise coming from behind us.....the toilet cans and generator had fallen off the truck, and the toilets were being drug behind the truck!!!!!!! They split open and one proceeded to get filth on our truck driver, Tank's, bare foot when he picked it up.....it was one of the funniest things ever, but after that we finished the trip like normal : )

River Chronicles #1

As many of my close friends and family know, I work for a river rafting company called Tour West. I have a link to their website on my page, and I would hope that anyone who visits my blog might pass by and check out what this amazing company has to offer. So I just returned from my first trip of the season and it was an amazing start. The weather was cold for the first two days of the trip then gradually got warmer until we left. The cold being mostly from me not wanting to get ALL of my rain gear out so I was a little chilly. The passengers were nice, and we all had a lot of fun. There were a few Crisis' between one woman and her diet coke, and an incident with her running barefoot on the beach and cutting up her big toe. But other than that things went super well. I did break a motor in a rapid named "Grape vine" named for the many rocks throughout the rapid making it look like a bunch of grapes. I hit a notorious rock that I thought I was clear of but I definitely wasn't. The rock is right at the top of the rapid, and it made the rest of the rapid a lot more interesting. The rest of the trip I had good runs, and we had a lot of fun. I leave for another trip tomorrow. It will be a 14 day hiking trip, and I can't wait for the experience. I hope to write a little about each trip here, in order to help me remember them. As well as let others know what an incredible experience it is to take a trip through the Grand Canyon on a raft; especially with Tour West. Anyone who reads this please go to the website Http://www.twriver.com and check out prices and dates to have the adventure of a lifetime!

Tired.........Need Sleep

So night before last, I was up till three am doing a ridiculous amount of math homework. I then woke up at 7:00 to let my dog outside. I crawled back to bed till 8:00 when my alarm finally went off. I drove to school, took a test, then went and worked an eight hour shift. I came home last night with my eyes already wanting to just stay closed every time I blinked, but no, I had to stay up super late. I ended up staying awake till 2:00 am. I slept great, although I had a very real dream that someone had broken in and had stolen ALL of our stuff from our apartment. At 7:00 a.m., without fail I was summoned by a puppy cry's to take my sweet      puppy Anna outside to go to the bathroom. I came in the house and immediately passed out on the couch until about ten minutes ago. I'm still super tired.......Well I put the computer down and fell asleep for another half an hour or so : ) but now it's 1:00 am and here I am awake and writing a blog post. I'm still super tired but at least school is out for the summer and I don't work till three tomorrow. Now I just gotta pray that my furry little alarm clock won't wake me up so early. Well, instead of venting about being tired some more I'm just gonna go to bed. Good night everyone pleasant dreams!!
P.S.- A puppy is the greatest alarm clock money can buy. That or possibly a new born infant : )

Happy Easter!!

This post will be short and sweet. First, HAPPY EASTER!!! Now I little reflection about today. We celebrate today because Jesus Christ our lord and savior over came death and walked from the tomb. By this great miracle we will all be able to rise from the grave at the second coming of our lord. This is the time of re-birth, and renewal. I hope that we can all remember the savior this day, and be grateful for his sacrifice for us. I don't plan on bringing very much religion into these posts, very often, but today I'm so grateful for the lords sacrifice for me and for us all. Again happy Easter to everyone! I hope everyone had a wonderful day!

Spring in the Desert!!

Spring in Wendover is an amazing time to be here in the high desert of western Utah and north eastern Nevada. The wild flowers begin to bloom in May the wettest month of the year in Wendover.  Normal precipitation of a little more than 2 inches of the annual total average of 4.9 inches comes in May.  This is when you'll see the desert come alive. There is not a better way to enjoy the beautiful scenery then a senic ATV or Jeep tour with an experienced guide.  A guide who takes the time to share knowlege of the abundant and interesting natural and human history of this area.   At IGS we have always promoted conservation and the http://www.treadlightly.org/ philosophy.  We use only existing trails on public land and spend countless hours cleaning up trash that is sadly and far to often left along the trails we use.  Join us on May 10th for a trail trash clean up day sponsored by IGS.  Accept our invitation under our event tab on our facebook page and we will email you the details.   While on our ATV rides you also have the opportunity to view wildlife including California Big Horn Sheep, Pronghorn Antelope, Wild Horses, Antelope Ground Squirrls, Red Fox, Chukkar, Horned Toads along with the occasional Bull Snake or Diamond Back Rattlesnake.  Make sure to bring a camera along for the many photo opportunities you will enjoy on our ATV tours.  Come now and catch this spring desert beauty because sadly the flowers will only be around for a few months. The weather is getting warmer and now is one of the best times of the year to ride. Give us a call and book your ride today! We hope to see you soon! go to our site for more information and book a tour http://www.intermountainguidenevada.com/  or call us toll free at 877.882.4386

Why Get an Education?

So I'm sitting here at work, and I've been thinking to myself, "why do I want an education?" Most people will say so you can get a good job. Or so you can learn new things. These questions aside, we all know the real reason behind higher education these days. So we can earn more money. I think about this and it makes me kinda sick. I get sick of chasing after money sometimes. When I was young it was nice having to work only to play. But now I'm forced to see my wife once or twice a week cause we're both working to pay bills. We are both chasing down good grades in school. Why? So we can have enough money to make life a little less stressful. We are losing time together because we are chasing down cash. I know that I'm young and I know that I'm impatient, but it irritates me to think about how I'm only going to school right now so I can make more money in the future. This is turning into another vent session, and I really don't want it to so I found an article which mentioned some other reasons why we should seek a higher education. However, in the opening paragraph it does support my point by saying,

"Many people value higher education for monetary reasons. They believe that a higher education will allow them to find more lucrative careers that have high salaries and bountiful opportunities for raises and bonuses. These monetary benefits may be able to increase a person's living condition because he or she will be able to afford housing and health costs. Despite these monetary reasons, there are other reasons why higher education is important." (http://education-portal.com)

The rest of the article goes on to talk about two main reasons the author thinks higher education is important like, "learning how to solve problems" and "learning how to deal with other people". I really enjoyed the small article and it made me feel a lot better, and caused me to think about other reasons why I'm going to college. The semester is over now but I'll have to keep these things in mind when august 29th rolls around. To anyone who reads this, I would appreciate comments as always. Tell me why you are going to school? or why you went to school? or to shut up and just go to school! : ) for anyone who reads, I appreciate it, and I hope that what I'm writing can be of some interest. Thanks!

End of Semester Blues.....Shoot Me!!

Well it's finally here. The last real day of the semester for this student at Utah Valley University. I'm tired, I'm sick of homework, and I'm sick of waking up early. I think I'll end up with good grades, I'm just tired and I need to spend some time with my wife. School is an important part of life but sometimes it's really hard to keep trudging on through the mud. I learned a lot this semester and for the first time in my life I actually enjoyed English. The assignments were challenging but not stupid, and class time wasn't a waste of my time. I know that everyone is thinking the same thing right about now while they are cramming for tests, staying up late to finish assignments, and striving to attain their A. I would just like to say to everyone CONGRATULATIONS for working hard this semester and getting one step closer to that magical piece of paper that says we are allowed to make a decent living in this life. I know life at school isn't exactly difficult, but what would I give to have it all behind me! So this post is another vent session, I wasn't sure what it was going to be when I started writing in on my Itouch while at school waiting for my last English class to start. But it felt good to write down what I've been thinking. After venting I feel a lot better so maybe don't shoot me, just give me the strength to finish up strong. If anyone reads this and wants to vent, the comment section is wide open!

BORED OUT OF MY MIND!!!!!!!!!!

This blog post is completely ridiculous cause I'm writing it for no reason other than to write. I've pretty much sat at home by myself with my little puppy for the last two days and I'm sick of it. The normal distractions like facebook, movies,Netflicks, internet, and sleeping have all failed me. I haven't spent any time with my wife since Monday night other than going to bed at night, or kissing her goodbye in the morning. I'm broke, I don't get paid till next week and I'm sick of school! basically I'm bored. I don't hate life, but I'm bored. I need a new adventure to start! I need a camping trip or something to get my blood pumping. I'm sick of sitting in the house, or watching movies. I wanna go somewhere and do something with my wife and little dog too! if anyone reads this and is bored too give me some ideas for trips, or new adventures cause I'm out of stuff to do at the moment!

Adventure in Moab: Sun, Sand, and..Snow?

So I recently returned from an adventure in Moab,Utah. Home of the world famous red rock. I went on this adventure with my wonderful wife and her incredible family. The adventure began last Wednesday for me, my wife, Brooke, and my sister in-law, Crystal. We left and took the three hour drive to what we hoped to be much warmer weather. With radio playing favorite songs, some good laughs and a few tricks from our cell phones we made it to one of the most popular destinations in all of Utah. The area we were to camp in had been decided by my brothers in-law, Craig and Mark, planners of the trip. Sand flats recreation area was to be our home away from home for the next four nights. We paid our fee of ten dollars per vehicle for the nights and headed off to find camp. Sand flats is the place to head if interested in mountain biking or jeeping over the "slick rock" and many great campsites are located just seconds away from trails like slick rock, hells revenge, and fins and things. After careful searching we found the spot that would work for our large group that would soon follow in the next two days. We pitched  one of the largest, most irritating zippered tents I've ever encountered and headed into town for dinner. We decides to eat at a place called "Zax" located on the corner of 100 south and right off the main Moab strip. The place had excellent pizza with tasty toppings and an even tastier crust. I enjoyed an all meat pizza loaded with pepperoni, sausage, ham, bacon, and seasoned ground beef, while Brooke and Crystal shared a Margarita pizza with fresh basil, tomatoes, and the perfect amount of cheese. Washed down with an ice cold lemonade the meal was a hit.(here's a link to their website to check out their menu!) http://www.zaxmoab.com Now full and extremely tired from our first day we wandered to the car and went up to our little camp in the desert. We got to camp and realized that the stars were exploded all over the sky and couldn't resist a small fire and a little star gazing. It was the perfect end to a great day.
The next day began very early....in fact I think we got so little sleep that night that we almost didn't even go to bed. We woke up to the sounds of our massive tent shaking in the wind, and felt sand rain down from beneath the rain fly where wind had blown it up underneath and saw the tent sway and bend as each gust of wind threatened to blow the tent down. Luckily....... I slept through most of it, as Brooke and Crystal were up worrying.....(yes, I know that was a jerk move but I couldn't help it. I was tired, but I would have gotten up to help if it had really blown down). We made it through the night and woke up to a windy cloudy day (which we had kinda been expecting). We silently decided to continue sleeping because of the stressful night and the warmth of our sleeping bags. Later, as we dosed comfortably, the loud crackle of something like sand hitting the tent woke me up. I looked outside and saw that it had began to hail! and that the wind had blown the rain fly off on the side keeping me dry. I hurried and fixed it and laid back down. Shortly after, the storm passed and a little sun came out to brighten the day, and lift our spirits. We shopped for a few things, ate lunch, and headed back to camp to take another nap, and relax for the day as we waited for more of our family to show up. My wife's parents, two more brothers, another sister, and max, the little family shih tzu. They all got there safe, and after getting everybody settled in, we headed down for another dinner at Zax, cause the fam needed to try the pizza. We all then headed back to camp for a little relaxation around the campfire.
Friday was a hectic day, and due to another irritating trick that our cell phones played on us (the time kept switching back and forth an hour randomly so we never knew exactly what time it was), we ended up missing out on something special, and to try to make up for it, we ate our sorrows away with pancakes and sausage, then followed that with a hike to Corona Arch. The scenery was beautiful, and the weather was perfect for the hike. The trail head is located near the bank of the Colorado river, and is about three miles round trip. The hike was easy and cables and a ladder made the tricky parts very do-able, even little max did it!! After the hike we went and had some lunch. A little chicken salad, with fruit, and cheese nips hit the spot, and gave us some more energy to finish the day strong with a drive into the desert to explore the back country, and enjoy more of what the area has to offer.  We finished off the night late, with my dutch oven lasagna with ricotta, spinach, zucchini, and Italian sausage taking FOREVER to cook, and still didn't get all the way hot, due to coal malfunction, wind, and who knows what else. Later, the last of our group arrived safely. Two more brothers, and another sister. We sat around the fire for awhile then went to bed on the coldest night of the trip!
Saturday started off with a bang as me and my wife took max for a morning walk to avoid having him walk on everyone's sleeping head. Although frost was on the sand, the sun was out and began to warm the freezing desert and it's occupants. Then most of the fam went and mountain biked on the Slick Rock practice loop while me, the parents and max went and hiked the Corona Arch once more. We then met for lunch of hogie sandwiches with all the fixings. Swiss cheese, ham, turkey, pickles, onions, tomatoes, EXCELLENT after a bike ride or hike. After relaxing for a bit, we all piled into the cars, and entered Arches National Park for the rest of the day, and saw some of the easy places like Balancing Rock, and Double Arch. Then went home for dutch oven roast, and roast veggies, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, potatoes, celery, and onions covered with a thick layer of cheese! The food was delicious and warm and my stomach was extremely grateful! But then out of nowhere it began to snow!!!! Very lightly, but it snowed!! So after dinner, a trip to the parents hotel for a dip in the jacuzzi was a necessary trip to take. We got there just in time to jump in and warm up and see the eleven or so other teenagers who got there after us, look at us enjoying the hot water and trudge off back to their rooms in despair.... It was Glorious! After the jacuzzi we sped home and jumped in bed before the warmth wore off : )
Sunday was our last day and we lazily got out of bed, ate some amazing breakfast burritos with eggs, sausage, potato's, onions, cheese, and a little salsa! What a great way to start the day! We left camp and headed into Arches again, but this time to take a little longer hike. We hiked  to "Double-O" arch, and then went a little further to "Dark Angel" a massive column of rock standing alone in the desert. The hike was relatively easy, and offered great views of the entire area, plus the sun was shining. It couldn't get much better! After the hike we went back to camp and ate some sloppy Joe's and veggies for lunch then began to pack up our camp. We got everything loaded and set off for home.
The family trip to Moab was quite the adventure filled with good laughs, great food, and memories that I'll remember forever. I cant wait till the next one!

ATV's In Wendover

For many people living here in the great state of Utah Wendover is the place to go and possibly strike it rich : )...and that's the way it's been as long as I can remember.  For me Wendover is much more than a remote desert watering hole but a place where the isolation and warm environment have preserved important pieces of our nations natural and human history.
Intermountain Guide Service came to Wendover in the summer of 2005 and began operations as the areas only tour company. Beginning with guided horseback, and ATV rides for visitors coming through  Wendover.  Fortunately, five years later with the sixth on the way IGS is still running daily guided ATV tours.  More recent additions are the guided van tours of the Bonneville Salt Flats and the historic world war II Wendover Air Field.
The ATV rides take visitors into the hills north of Wendover, and offer spectacular trails and beautiful views that are unmatched. Our guides share their knowledge and make several stops to share interpretations about local plant and animal life, as well as geology and human history of the area. Rides normally last two hours, but one hour rides are available. If your interested in longer rides, we also offer 4 hour rides, and group discounts are available.
Salt flat van tours are usually an hour long and are done in a large air conditioned van and are great for those wanting to get outdoors without having to expend too much energy. Tours run daily and guides share history of the city and the history of the salt flats, as well as the natural and human history of the area. Wendover air base tours  focus on the historical Wendover Airfield, the base was the largest Army reserve in the world at it's time with up to 20,000 residents, and over 1,000 air crews were trained there.  The 509th composite group consisting of 1,700 men and lead by Col. Paul Tibbits, did a significant amount of their training for the first deployment of Atomic weapons at Wendover Field.
At IGS we are happy to accommodate rides to whoever we can because we love sharing our knowledge with others and helping others enjoy the outdoors. We would love to have you out on a ride.  for more info or contact us at http://www.intermountainguidenevada.com/ or call 1-877-UTAHFUN hope to see you soon!

A Bit About Me

My name is Collin Yadon and I'm 23 years old. I was recently married to one of the most amazing women in the world, and we started our life together. We both work all the time, my wife as a server in a restaurant and me in a group home for adolescents. We are currently going to school and pursuing degrees. For my adventurous side, I work as a river guide during the summer, as well as work as a four wheeler guide in-between. I lived in brasil for a couple years and it changed my life, and I intend to return as soon as money and time will allow. I hope to have many more adventures with my wife by my side in the future, and I will attempt to share some of my experiences here. I love life and all it hands me. I love the lord and all he gives me. And I love my family and friends to always share experiences and good times with. Now let the adventure begin!!
